Defensive Driving Online

National Highway Safety Administration Online Drivers Ed and Driving Safety

This information applies to the following GEORGIA course:

Can I take the Georgia Defensive Driving Course online instead of in a classroom setting?

Yes, however you must first receive permission to do so. The Georgia Department of Driver Services does not officially certify or endorse any online driver education program for Defensive Driving at this time. So, before you take an online course, you must first check with the appropriate authority to make sure that your certificate will be accepted.

When taking the course to get a ticket dismissed or points removed from a license:

You should obtain written permission from a judge in the state of Georgia. Ideally, this would be a judge in the court where you will need to present the completion certificate.

When taking the course to get an insurance discount:

Contact your insurance company first to confirm that this online course will be accepted as a way to lower your premium. Insurance companies vary as to what kind of courses they are willing to accept for a discount. If they insist on a course that is DDS certified, then you will need to take an in-person class.

How long is the course, and is there a final exam?

The course takes about 6 hours to complete. There is a final exam at the end of the course. It is a 30-question multiple choice test. You will need to answer 21 questions correctly in order to pass.

When and how will I get my certificate?

After completing the course, you will be able to download your certificate immediately as a printable PDF file.
